Reference Patchcords connectors

The optical reference connectors are designed with reduced tolerances and used to measure attenuation losses; they should be considered as components of measuring equipment, as they largely contribute to the uncertainty of measurement.

To limit the variability of attenuation loss measurement using reference connectors, DIAMOND uses unimodal fibers selected with reduced tolerances on the MFD (mode field diameter), in accordance with the CEI 61755-2-4 / -2-5 standard. It will be possible to obtain measurement values which can be repeated in the range of ±0.1 dB only if we randomly change the reference connector while applying the type of fiber and the tolerance parameters published in the standards mentioned below.

The main parameters which influence the performance of reference connectors are the positioning of the fiber cores, the angle of their axes and the variability of the mode field diameter (MFD). DIAMOND designs high-performance reference connectors by means of a standardized composite ferrule, as well as an active core alignment technology (ACA) which allows for the reduction of eccentricity of the fiber cores and control over angular misalignment.

Still, it is very important to inspect and if necessary, clean the connectors as well as the measuring cables, but also the measuring equipment cables and the cables of the components to be measured (DUT: device under test) before use.
